Q&A: Help finding a high-volume all in one printer?
Question by Derek D: Help finding a high-volume all in one printer?
I work at a small-town police department and we need a color laser all in one unit that will print around 30,000 pages per year. We use a Samsung CLX-3175fn now and it seems like every part has to be replaced in the printer before the year is up. We burn through cartridges and now have to replace the imaging unit and will soon have to replace rollers, etc. We don’t want to spend thousands on some big printer but want something that has a very cheap price-per-page print and doesn’t require the replacement of parts before the several hundred thousand print count. Network capability is also a must.

Any network enabled printer with that print duty will go through extras very fast, color printing is VERY expensive, you need to look at a cheapish commercial printer which are built much more substantially than home type printers, you need someone to calculate all the costs including maintenance over the life of the computer to get a true cost per page you will probably find the more expensive printers are actually cheaper for high output printing overall.

It would be a shame to have you guys buy an ordinary printer, then have to deal with the cartridges.
While you also don’t want to get a big high volume printer,…
How about getting a refurbished older model printer that is essentially a big printer, but not too new.
Something that is like 4 or 6 years old.
The argument is that because its not new, there ought to be parts for it which isn’t a problem. And the toner will be of the type that is a bulk type, that you would find in a professional print shop.
A refurbished older model of a big printer is the best course of action for you. Contact a sales rep for Xerox, IBM or other printer company that is in your area. They will be more than happy to set you up with a used, serviced model that has a history of good maintenence and durability.
Its your choice.
Big print shop and big business are always getting new equipment, and sometimes you can get a great deal on a machine that will do exactly the kind of work that you need it for, and at a price that is within your budget.
You really don’t have to have a New Machine. just one that works like new, and has a history of dependability.
good luck!

I have a Ricoh CL1000N which I bought several years ago for $ 300. I have seen it at $ 200 online since it’s a discontinued model. It prints at 31 ppm in one color but you have to cut that for each color so it’s about 20 ppm for 2 colors, 10 ppm for 3 colors. It prints very sharp and even photos on plain paper come out pretty good. You can buy new toner cartridges for about $ 80 which print 6,500 (color) to 10,000 (black) pages but the cartridge is also easy to refill for about $ 50. It has never needed servicing.
